Want to Boost Your Reach? Social Media Tips for 2023
Trying to master social media can feel a lot like putting water into a bucket with a hole at the bottom.
As the bucket empties, you have to keep putting more water in it to keep it full. As social media changes (and it changes fast!), it’s easy to feel like you’re scrambling to figure out the next trend when you’ve only just mastered the last one.
When you feel like you can’t keep up, it’s important to step back and take a deep breath. What is the point of all this social media stuff anyway?
The point is to boost your reach to find more customers and clients. The point isn’t to be as trendy as possible.
Instead of focusing on daily trends across platforms like Instagram and TikTok, take a broader view and consider the big trends for the year. It’s the best way to maximize your reach without feeling obligated to make a dance video or lip sync your content to someone else’s audio.
Here are the social media tips you need to know to boost your reach in 2023.
Get Community Minded
For a long time, social media has been all about the numbers. The more followers you have or the more views you get, the wider your reach.
Although that’s still true to a point, it’s time to start focusing on the quality of that reach. It’s much more impactful to have a handful of followers who engage with your brand regularly than it is to have thousands of followers who mindlessly scroll past your content on their feed.
The point of creating a community is to engage with a group of followers who all learn from and communicate with each other. It allows you to forge deeper connections, which in turn creates brand loyalty. After all, 60% to 70% of business comes from existing customers. By creating a community, you can create a wider, more dedicated pool of existing customers who are excited to interact with and purchase from your brand.
Share Different Content on Different Platforms
Social media marketing takes a lot of time. One way businesses have been saving time is by posting the same content across different social media platforms.
That isn’t going to work in 2023.
Audiences have come to expect certain kinds of content depending on the social media platform they’re using. If you post something out of place, your followers will notice.
That doesn’t mean you have to create totally new content for every platform! You can use the same information, just package it differently. For example, a short clip works best on Tiktok, while a polished Reel is better for Instagram.
Don’t feel like you can juggle so many social media platforms when they all require their own dedicated content? Then don’t!
It’s much better to pick one or two social media accounts where you can foster a close-knit community and post unique content than it is to copy and paste content across three or more platforms.
Social Media as a Search Engine
Google has been the search king for decades, but that’s changing, especially among Gen Z.
Instead of hitting up Google when they’re searching for a restaurant or they want to learn a new skill, they head to Tiktok.
They aren’t the only ones. It’s estimated that 24% of consumers between the ages of 18 and 54 use social media platforms to search for brands and information more often than they use a search engine.
To make sure you’re searchable on social media, you need to:
- Include relevant keywords and hashtags in all of your social posts.
- Use relevant keywords and hashtags in your bio.
- Have consistent usernames that are easy to search for across platforms.
- Add your location or address to your bio, if it’s relevant to your business.
Partner With a Micro Influencer
The number of followers is losing its sway in the name of building stronger communities. It’s also losing its sway when it comes to influencers.
More businesses than ever are partnering with micro influencers (those with less than 100,000 followers) because they generate up to 60% more engagement than macro influencers (those with over 100,000 followers).
Perhaps the biggest benefit is that they are more affordable to work with than social media celebrities. You can afford to work with them more long-term, giving you the opportunity to create more trust and more brand loyalty among their followers.
Know When to Post
Knowing when to post has always been important. More people use each platform at certain times, which means more people are likely to see what you post.
It’s true that each platform has its own best posting times, but you don’t have to get that specific if it makes your brain spin just thinking about how to coordinate it all.
It turns out that all platforms have two ideal posting windows in common:
- 12:00PM to 3:00PM
- 6:00PM to 9:00PM
No matter what platform you’re using, stick to those two time frames and you can boost engagement.
Be Funny—When It’s Appropriate
What kind of content do you watch the most often? What kind of content sticks with you afterward? And what kind of content do you most like to share with your friends and your family?
Chances are, you said funny content.
A whopping 66% of polled social media marketers said funny content is the most effective. It’s clear that you should use it when you can in your social media marketing campaigns.
Have a more serious brand? Don’t be funny if it isn’t appropriate, but don’t automatically assume you can’t be funny. If a funeral director can do it, you probably can too.
